The Nigerian naira remained stable against major international currencies on Tuesday, with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) quoting the US dollar at ₦1,356.30, the British pound at ₦1,808.90, and the euro at ₦1,575.90.

The currency’s steady performance comes as Nigeria’s gross external reserves continue to strengthen, crossing the $50 billion mark for the first time in months.

According to CBN data, Nigeria’s gross external reserves stood at $50.51 billion as of June 11, 2026, up from $48.45 billion a month earlier. This represents an increase of approximately $2.06 billion, or 4.2%, within a single month.

The rise in reserves is significant because it strengthens the country’s ability to support foreign exchange liquidity, meet external obligations, and absorb potential shocks in global markets. Higher reserve levels typically improve investor confidence and reduce concerns about the availability of foreign currency.

Naira Stability Backed by Stronger Reserves

Analysts often view external reserves as one of the strongest indicators of a country’s capacity to defend currency stability. As reserves increase, the monetary authorities gain greater flexibility to manage liquidity pressures in the foreign exchange market.

The latest reserve growth coincides with the naira’s ability to maintain relative stability around the ₦1,356/$ level, suggesting that improved foreign currency inflows are helping to support market confidence.

What It Means for Businesses

For importers, manufacturers, and investors, the combination of a stronger reserve position and a more stable naira reduces uncertainty around foreign exchange costs. Businesses that depend on imported inputs may benefit from improved planning and more predictable pricing conditions if the trend continues.
