The Nigerian Exchange ended the week ended August 14, 2026 lower, with the All-Share Index falling 1.20% to 242,619.20 points and market capitalization dropping to ₦156.62 trillion.
The bigger signal was trading activity. Equity volume more than doubled to 12.15 billion shares, up 126.8% from the previous week, while turnover rose 26.6% to ₦176.06 billion.
But the surge was highly concentrated.
The NGX was significantly more active this week, but not significantly healthier.

Financial stocks dominated
Financial Services accounted for 92.25% of total equity volume, with Fortis Global Insurance, Cornerstone Insurance and Consolidated Hallmark Holdings alone accounting for 78.07%.
That means the jump in volume should not yet be read as a broad return of bullish sentiment. Liquidity increased, but participation remained narrow.
Breadth weakened
Only 26 stocks gained, against 59 decliners, while 62 closed unchanged.
The sector picture was also weak. The Consumer Goods Index fell 6.72%, the biggest decline among the major sectors. Banking dropped 1.48%, while Insurance declined 2.72%.
Consumer Goods was already down 8.34% in August, making it the weakest major sector month-to-date.
Stocks to watch
Trans-Nationwide Express led the weekly gainers with a 32.09% rise, followed by International Energy Insurance at 31.68%.
At the other end, AVA Capital fell 34.55%, while Unilever Nigeria declined 18.94% and Zichis Agro-Allied lost 15.08%.
NGX also listed 9.236 billion additional Lasaco Assurance shares from its rights issue, increasing the company’s total shares outstanding to 20.320 billion.
BuyerMetrics Market Watch
The key signal this week is volume without breadth.
The NGX was significantly more active, but the ASI fell and almost twice as many stocks declined as gained.
For next week, the important question is whether the heavy liquidity begins to spread beyond the handful of financial stocks dominating turnover.
BuyerMetrics Bottom Line
Watch breadth, not just volume.
If trading activity remains high and more stocks begin participating in the upside, the current weakness could prove temporary.
If volume remains concentrated while decliners continue to dominate, the August correction could deepen.
